{"id":15229,"date":"2024-01-10T14:49:34","date_gmt":"2024-01-10T19:49:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dunany.ca\/?p=15229"},"modified":"2024-02-22T10:09:36","modified_gmt":"2024-02-22T15:09:36","slug":"dunany-under-the-ice-memories-of-the-big-ice-storm-of-january-1998","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dunany.ca\/en\/dunany-under-the-ice-memories-of-the-big-ice-storm-of-january-1998\/15229","title":{"rendered":"Dunany under the Ice: Memories of the Big Ice Storm of January 1998."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It is January of the year of Our Lord 1998.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between January 5 and 10, 100mm of freezing rain fell on southern Quebec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Dunany, it\u2019s a carnage!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brian Gauley, the contractor who looked after our house in our absence, said that to get to Dunany, one of his men had to walk in front of his truck, chain saw in hand, to clear Dunany Road and allow him to continue on his way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At that time, we only came to Dunany on weekends. We had acquired Leonard and Minnie Gain&#8217;s house in the spring of 1996. Living in Montreal, we were curious to see with our own eyes the state of our second home. If my memory serves me well, linemen from Detroit came here to support their colleagues from Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ice crisis left more than half of Quebec homes and hundreds of establishments such as residences for the elderly without electricity. In the neighbouring Laurentides region, Mont\u00e9r\u00e9gie, pylons and transmission lines that were thought to be indestructible collapsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Approximately 15,000 Canadian Armed Forces soldiers were deployed to ensure the safety of citizens and provide emergency services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is estimated that this event cost the lives of 16 people and caused losses of $1.6 billion for the Canadian economy. More than 700,000 claims \u2013 worth a total of $1.4 billion \u2013 were made to insurance companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec had to invest $2 billion to strengthen its electricity transmission network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Feel free to share your memories in the comments section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is January of the year of Our Lord 1998.
